YOUtheatre presents: Steel Magnolias written by Robert Harling

Tickets: £12.00

Gather around the hair dryers in Truvy's in-home beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana and eavesdrop as a gaggle of gossipy women get their hair done whilst gabbing about life, love and everyone else's business.  Truvy's motto "There is no such thing as natural beauty," sets the tone for an evening of comic and bittersweet interplay where the women can get a touch-up of their roots and their souls in this female haven away from the men!

Hilarious and touching in turn, the world of these steel magnolia Southern Belles, told in the midst of the hair dyes, combs, sinks and scissors, guarantees laughter and tears.

THE MAGNETS

Tickets: £19.50 Pass Card Members: £16.50

Six guys. Six voices : No Luggage. No Compromise.

Imagine...
...dancing to the best band you've heard in ages. On stage are six sharp-suited men with infectious tunes, slick moves and a tight rhythm section. But something is different about this group. There are no instruments, no backing tracks, and yet the music goes on. Then you realise. All of this amazing sound is being made with voices alone…
you have just imagined The Magnets.

"A cappella singing straight from the Gods" Edinburgh Evening News

The Magnets are Britain's most exciting vocal group since the 1960s. Combining harmony singing with beatbox drumming, they have taken a cappella music to a whole new audience, and created a sound to rival that of any band with instruments. In fact, The Magnets have the advantage over any conventional band. They can perform any time, anywhere there is space for six men to stand and sing. From street
corner to arena, just add an audience and let the show begin.

Career highlights include tours with Tom Jones, Lisa Stansfield, and Michael Ball, appearances on TV shows such as Parkinson, BBC Proms in the Park, and GMTV, and concerts at venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, Birmingham Symphony Hall, and for the Queen's Jubilee at Buckingham Palace. In demand for private events large and small, The Magnets have found themselves singing everywhere from official functions for world leaders to Elle Macpherson's living room, and for numerous charity events.

Making music a cappella enables the band to take an alternative look at music, and recent theatre shows have featured surprising versions of songs as diverse as Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division, and Bon Jovi's Living On A Prayer.  However, The Magnets are not too cool to party, and the songs are spiced with
humour, dancing, audience participation, and of course Andy ‘Lips’ Frost’s incredible vocal drum solo.

Epsom Literary Society presents

Martin & Charlie Wheatley present BANJOS AND GUITARS TO STRING-DRIVEN SWING

How the family of stringed instruments created the sound of American popular music

A lot has been said, and written, recently about the invention of the electric guitar and how it shaped popular music. For about 70 years before that event, though, acoustic stringed instruments had been at the very heart of things. Acoustic stringed instruments were what made the music sound the way it did. This lecture recital explains and demonstrates how it all works.

  • How the banjo came out of Africa by way of Appomattox, Virginia, and gave birth to Ragtime.

  • How a Honolulu schoolboy invented the Hawaiian guitar and created the signature sound of Country music

  • How the classical guitar of Old Europe crossed the Atlantic and was transformed into the most popular instrument ever

  • How the mandolin migrated from Naples to Kalamazoo, Michigan and was re-born

  • How the ukulele travelled from Portugal via Hawaii to mainland U.S.A. and became the essential musical fashion accessory of the 1920s – and today!

Martin Wheatley has spent all of his professional life playing this music and learning about its history, playing all of the above-named instruments and more. He has toured the United States performing and collecting instruments and 78 rpm records, played Hawaiian guitar in Hawaii, recorded with a host of acknowledged masters of vintage music. In this lecture-recital he will be accompanied by his teenage son Charlie, a prodigious talent himself.

It is a fascinating story but, above all, it’s a lot of fun.

ANDY KIRKPATRICK

Tickets: £13.50

The UK’s only “stand-up mountaineer” Andy Kirkpatrick is a natural performer with talents to rival the top comedy acts in the UK.  His inimitable style coupled with his love for all things extreme make for a unique evening of entertainment, with stunning images and footage accompanying his tales of terror from the steep.

In his past shows Andy searched for an answer to his perpetual quest for adventure.  ‘Off The Wall’ is his third attempt to answer the reason why he climbs, as he charts the last two years of his life with a collection of stories, including climbing the mighty El Capitan in Yosemite with injured serviceman Major Phil Packer, a dramatic rescue from the North Face of the Eiger, a near drowning at Cape Wrath and a trip to Number 10.

Andy is a hugely popular speaker and accomplished story-teller, as comfortable on stage as he is lashed to an ice-clad mountain in a 100mph storm. In ‘Off The Wall’, he bucks the trend of macho mountain men, recounting his crazy adventures with a heady mix of observational comedy and self-deprecating tales of survival, expertly weaving his narrative with stunning audio visuals to give his audiences a real taste of adventure.

Sarah Kennedy is a familiar figure both on radio and television. She has been the presenter of Radio 2’s early morning pre-breakfast-show slot since 1992. Her television credits include, Game For a Laugh, Holiday and The Animals Roadshow.

She began her broadcasting career in Singapore before joining Radio 2 in 1976, where she presented Family Favourites, and other programmes.

GIDDY OX & SPL PRESENT THE NATIONAL TOUR OF ‘The Rebel Cell’

From the original producers of the West End Smash Hit ‘Into the Hoods’ and the critically acclaimed theatre company Giddy Ox comes the multi-award winning show, ‘The Rebel Cell’.

Rebellious is the only way to describe this show. With real-time camera work, interactive video, a live scratch DJ and a lyrical hip hop battle that will blow your socks off, this show is a philosophical revolution!

Set in the year 2015, England has adopted terror laws that dispense with the last remaining civil liberties. Dizraeli, the leader of the revolution, has been captured by the state police. Baba Brinkman is the journalist assigned to interview the prisoner and get to the bottom of his dissident politics. Enter the Rebel Cell, a lyrical battle of wits and world-views.

Set in an interview room in a state police station, the two men lock horns in a daring and vivacious battle of political ideologies. Using multi-media projections, real-time camera work and a live scratch DJ, the audience is taken back to 2010 to scenes which reveal a turbulent history between Dizraeli and Brinkman.

The two young revolutionaries join forces to form their group Mud Sun. As success snowballs into underground sensation, the clash in priorities between the two artists becomes a chasm. Betrayal, political ideologies and greed tears the two friends apart as we arrive once again in the interview room, in 2015.

A highly irreverent political comedy, this 'thrilling rap drama' is a night of vivacious fun, 'dextrous word-smithery' and awe-inspiring eloquence.

NICK ROSS ORCHESTRA - In the Christmas Mood

Tickets: £18.50 Pass Card Members: £14.50

The lights soften, the mood settles. An audience waits for that first moment of sound. The Big Band is poised, relaxed, but with eyes anxious for the lead. Then, as if giving body to an echo, the murmured notes of ‘Moonlight Serenade’…and the night, it seems, is suddenly full and timeless.

There are those who watch and listen who tap a shy finger to the melodies, others who follow with a silent foot-beat, still others who murmur softly through the lyrics, and those who simply permit a fleeting smile. But common to all are memories.

Recapture the sounds of a bygone era as the Nick Ross Orchestra presents ‘an unmissable evening of music and song’ – the Classic Big Band Sound of the 1940s with a Christmas Twist!

PAUL JONES AND DAVE KELLY

Tickets: £18.50 Pass Card Member: £14.80

These long standing co-vocalists with The Blues Band get a big buzz out of taking things down a level, simplifying the music a little, and plying their trade as a duo, thus imbuing their very own personal and individual approaches to a dynamic, rootsy and exhilarating set of Country Blues. Venues large and small have been hushed and then enraptured by the sense of ‘old times’ in the Mississippi Delta.

PAUL JONES vocals and harmonica

Paul’s career is well charted - heartthrob singer with Manfred Mann in the '60s, solo hits, songwriting, film and theatre success .… a thrillingly varied and successful career. Apart from his live work with The Blues Band and The Manfreds, he is also currently well known and respected for his work as a DJ, presenting BBC Radio 2’s Rhythm and Blues show and his Jazz FM programmes. Paul’s feeling for his music and masterfully soulful harmonica playing has kept him at the top of his field. He’s been voted top male vocalist by The British Blues Connection and in 1994 was presented with a special award for ‘services to the blues’

DAVE KELLY vocals and guitar

Dave followed his very talented sister, Jo Ann Kelly, into the world of professional music in 1966. They had previously been regular winners of every talent contest they could get their names down for.  London’s frenetically hip, yet cool, culture at that time made it seem natural that Dave’s path would cross with the those of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Son House, Buddy Guy …. to name a few. Sometimes the meetings were casual but ultimately Dave has played with all of them and toured with Wolf and Hooker.  Over the years he’s achieved many accolades for his guitar work and vocals. He was voted Acoustic Artist of the Year in 1992, '94, '96, '97 and '98 by the British Blues Connection. Dave’s performances can get you rocking, or dreaming, and can even hit the tear ducts!  He performs it – you feel it.

LIBERA

Tickets: £18.50 Pass Card Members: £14.80 Child under 16: £12.50

If you have never heard the unique, heavenly sound of LIBERA, then prepare yourself for something very special indeed. The boys who make up Libera have been described as “normal” and “ordinary”. However, as their recordings and performances demonstrate, the music they produce is anything but. With shimmering, mystical chords and ecstatic harmonies, often performed in Latin, they are unlike any other group you have ever heard.

Familiar to audiences across the world, the boys have a stunningly original sound, which is at once both ancient and modern. Their distinctive flowing white robes symbolise the traditional origins of their style - yet their music reaches across the generations to a new mainstream audience.  Libera’s success in album charts around the world bears witness to the extraordinary appeal of this unique ‘boy band’.   Enchanting audiences wherever they go, they have attracted an enthusiastic fan base in many countries, particularly the US, UK, Japan, the Philippines and Korea.

Through their involvement in Libera, the boys have travelled the world, recorded movie soundtracks and CDs and served as backing singers to mega-stars. But, as one of the boys said, “The travelling and filming is fun but even if we didn’t go anywhere I’d still want to do it because I just love singing.”
