We are the Lions Mr Manager - The Great Grunwick Strike
The inspirational story of Jayaben Desai and the Grunwick dispute, a key moment in race, class and gender relations in the UK.
On the 20th August 1976, one of the hottest days of the year, a group of South Asian workers walked out of a factory in protest at their working conditions and the way they were treated. Led by Jayaben and her female colleagues, the striking workers demanded their right to be treated with dignity, equality and to be represented by a union. Their strength and determination challenged stereotypes, changed the the face of the usual male led trade unions and inspired others to speak out against injustice.
"What you are running here is not a factory, it is a zoo. In a zoo there are many types of animals, Some are monkeys who dance on your fingers tips, others are lions who can bite you...We are the lions Mr Manager" Jayaben Desai
