On 2 March 2024, The Epsom Symphony Orchestra is proud to present “Elegy & Idyll”. With a captivating programme of music; all by British composers, this is definitely not one to miss.
The concert is opened with the overture ‘Di Ballo’ – a joyful set of dances so typical of composer Arthur Sullivan. The first half also features Delius’ Summer Evening which promises to whisk you off to a place of calm and serenity. Then comes the storm.
At the heart of the programme is Ben Tarlton’s rendition of the Elgar Cello Concerto. Written at the end of the First World War, this iconic concerto is thought to be one of Elgar’s last works. Often considered the most famous of all works for the cello, the music demonstrates the depression that Elgar felt as a result of the destruction surrounding him.
The Orchestra, under the baton of Musical Director Darrell Davison, concludes this whirlwind of emotions with the gentler sounds of Vaughan Williams’ fifth symphony. Premiered at the Proms in 1943, this symphony features a number of themes from the composer’s then-unfinished Opera ‘The Pilgrim’s Progress’. Join the Orchestra for this uplifting, melodic experience!
