Surrey was primarily a Parliamentarian stronghold during the English Civil War (1642–1651), vital for defending London and securing local resources like the gunpowder mills at Chilworth. But what happened in Epsom and Ewell? It experienced religious disputes and the enforcement of civil marriages under Cromwell. The area was strategically important, with the Downs used for training armies and local skirmishes. Hear a soldier’s account and the medical treatments of the day.
